I wanted to share my thoughts on the current state of social media. Instagram is broken. Meta is broken. The system of algorithmic amplification used by major social media companies is broken. It was horrifying to learn that Instagram’s algorithm is connecting and promoting pedophiles.

Even more horrifying is the fact that they have not been able to change their algorithm to fix the problem. We must rebuild social media and move away from algorithms so that something like this cannot happen. From the start, MeWe made the decision to not use algorithms and to not amplify content. It’s not a perfect system by any means but we’ve stayed true to our values of not allowing opaque algorithms to drive toxic engagement on MeWe for the sake of profit. We believe in the original promise of social media, connecting friends and family and building community, which is why people on MeWe only see the content that they have chosen to see. Other social media platforms could make the same decision.

Our decision to move to a decentralized platform is an investment in rebuilding social media that is community driven and respects the autonomy and dignity of its users, not its advertisers.
